Krosswerdz’ foundations were established by the In Da Midst community, which started on the 1st of October 1998 in Sydney, Australia. The group was formed as means of encouraging Christians involved in the Hip-Hop culture and supporting those who felt ostracized by the mainstream Church. The group developed a national network, and co-ordinated releasing albums and live events in both secular and “christian” scenes. In 2006 the leaders behind the In Da Midst community felt the need for a monthly meeting and the Sydney crew started what we now call Krosswerdz.
Since it’s humble beginnings in 2006 the Krosswerdz community now has teams in various forms throughout Australia. Besides the head quarters in Sydney groups meet in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, and in regional areas such as the Gold Coast, NSW’s Central Coast and Wagga Wagga. The focus varies from place to place but the network allows a constant exchange of ideas and a valuable resource to the Hip-Hop community at large.
The Krosswerdz motto is The Werd On The Street and that’s something that we strive to maintain. We endeavor to be a touch stone for the overall Australian hip-hop scene by refusing the safe option of only hiding away in the perceived safety of a church clique. We are sowing into the Oz hip-hop community by educating people about the positive aspects of the Hip-Hop culture through supporting, organising and sponsoring mainstream Hip-Hop events.
Krosswerdz is an outreach focused group of diverse Christians all over Australia involved in Hip-Hop culture. The style of some of our events has seen us being nick named “the Hip-Hop Church”. While a few of our events may sometimes slightly resemble a church service, we would like to stress that technically this affectionate nick name is incorrect; the Krosswerdz team attend their own individual Church communities, and cover a cross-section of denominations and traditions of Christianity.
