What is Hip-Hop?
Hip-Hop is a urban sub-culture which sprang up from block parties in the ghettos of New York in the early 1970s. It encompasses four main elements:1} Breakdancing (B-Boying / B-Girling)
2} Rapping (MCing)
3} DJing (Turntablism)
4} Graffiti Art.
There are also other cultural expressions that are important to Hip-Hop, such as beat boxing, production & urban fashion just to name a few. The culture began to spread in the early 1980s when the elements were featured in music videos and movies. Now the Hip-Hop culture reaches to every corner of the globe.
In the last decade Hip-Hop has been twisted to glorify negative behaviour such as: drug use, crime, sexism and violence, and this is where we at Krosswerdz step in. We vehemently oppose this perception that many in the mainstream media push as Hip-Hop and so we strive to promote Hip-Hop in its original form: as a medium & voice for positive change. The well documented origins of the culture lie in honestly expressing ones situation and in educating oneself & sharing that knowledge. We at Krosswerdz add to this equation by encouraging a relationship with the Creator.
Hip-Hop empowers people through true reflection and discovery which leads to original artistic expression. Fake violent stereotypes and unattainable images of wealth that have become attached to the culture only serves to keep people trapped. We at Krosswerdz offer an alternative to this by taking Hip-Hop back to its original essence and providing outlets for people to celebrate the culture while expressing themselves. The leadership team of Krosswerdz is unashamedly christian, as are many of the seminal artists who were pioneers of Hip-Hop, and it's in their footsteps we strive to follow as we work with any and all community groups leading and co-ordinating Hip-Hop workshops & events for people of all ages, nationalities and beliefs.
